Why did you join Refugees Forward?

We would like to get more experience in running and managing a business, particularly in the case of social businesses. Through Refugees Forward we hope that newcomers are well integrated in the new society and able to play a positive role in a professional way.

Could you tell us a bit about your background and what project you are going to be working on?

We started this project as a group of young guys who felt that they have to be active and present the true image of newcomers. The activities we organised made us useful and part of the solution, not a crisis as projected in the media. We focused on the needed and simple activities first, such as sport, music, cultural parties, intermediation, dialog tables and movie club. Later we developed the project through the social work tools, so we could be problem-solvers within the newcomers community itself and between both communities. We see our mission towards those communities as: “The prevention of social costs by early help with debts, addiction, loneliness, school dropout, lack of future prospects, chance of radicalization and sinking into crime. Preventing social tensions through participation in dialogue and image-building around effort by and for our own community.”

What would you like to learn over the course of the program?

We would like to understand the most effective way to run this project in the Dutch social business environment.

Where do you see yourself in 2 years?

Leading a successful organisation that is able to empower newcomers and help the Dutch community.
